I thought in this newsletter you might enjoy reading about a recent patient visit at the office. It’s not meant to be explanatory of any technique I use, but it does illustrate the art of possibility in a holistic context as well as how I think when treating any of you.
The patient (whom we’ll call Dora since I don’t have any patients called Dora) had suffered with chronic hip and thigh pains. I had recently treated her with chiropractic and physical therapy, but because of the severity of pain I referred her to an orthopedist I knew who I was confident would try a cortisone injection to the hip.
To my surprise and Dora’s, the orthopedist took some x-rays and decided the spine was the cause of pain and told Dora she would need spinal surgery in the future. MRI’s of the spine and hip were ordered. Upon obtaining the results, the orthopedist changed his diagnosis and decided the cause of pain was hip joint pathology and a cortisone injection would resolve the pain. The injection was performed, no follow-up appointment was recommended as the relief, he assured her, should occur within two days, although powerful anti-inflammatory medication was prescribed.
Two weeks later Dora made an appointment with me. She was still in severe pain, couldn’t sleep and was crying. She was also concerned about the adverse effects the prescription might be having since she had a past history of GERD (acid reflux).
What to do? Using Applied Kinesiology (muscle response testing), I was able to determine that the hip joint was improved and that the pain was coming from surrounding tissues as demonstrated by auriculotherapy testing (acupuncture points on the ear which designate precise body parts). Additionally, the high-powered prescription medication was not found to be as effective as simple ibuprofen. Fascial nerve receptors for pain and hyper-sensitivity were found to be disrupted in the thigh, outer hip and gluteal regions.
Acupuncture meridians (energy pathways) generally reflect most physical conditions and connect intimately with the nervous system. Determining which meridians were imbalanced allowed me to determine specific chi gong exercises to re-balance the nervous system and fascia. Additionally, an herbal muscle relaxant containing valerian, passiflora, hops and lemon balm was found to offer relief from painful tension and spasms.
The chi gong exercises immediately eased the tension and pain while in the office. Kinesiology taping (see last newsletter) improved things even more.
I should mention that as a matter of course, I did rule out allergies, immune issues and stress as primary causes of pain. And yes, I did treat Dora with chiropractic which remains a powerful and underutilized means of restoring and maintaining good health. Dora was able to leave the office feeling much better and hopeful at last!
I would not be able to accomplish this much without Applied Kinesiology and the holistic approach.
Kinesiology taping is helping our patients. Let us know if you would like to purchase some for home use.
